The Tri-Angle Combatives (TriCom)
system is comprised of three combat proven martial systems, combined
with the principles and philosophies of American military and law
enforcement combatives. The TriCom system is formulated on the strategic
principle of the triangle. The triangle serves as the basis for
footwork, striking and the tactical principles of close quarters combat.
Pekiti-Tirsia Kali makes up the core and framework upon which the
TriCom program is based. Kali is a combative art
indigenous to the Philippines, forged in the close-quarter jungle
environment common to Southeast Asia. Kali is not a “self-defense” art
by any means, but as an art developed for military use it is considered
an “offensive/ counter-offensive” art, with the philosophy being that
the best defense is a good offense. Kali has been popular with military
and law enforcement organizations around the world, primarily in the
Special Operations community. The attraction has been to the emphasis on
the practical, the sound combative training methodology and the
effective use of edged and impact weapons. The triangle is a common
motif in the banner of most Kali schools. It is used to depict concepts
and principles including but not limited to footwork patterns and angles
of attack.
Muay Thai, translated into English as Thai Boxing, is a martial system
with origins in the ancient battlefield tactics of the Siamese (or Thai)
army. The art is known for brutal efficiency in the area of punches,
kicks, elbows, knees, standing grappling and head-butts. Thai training
methods develop devastating power, speed and superb cardio-vascular
endurance as well as fighting spirit. Muay Thai has been proven very
effective outside the ring, and has been embraced enthusiastically by a
variety of military and law enforcement organizations. Much like in
Kali, triangular patterns are often used in footwork and attack angles.
Combat Grappling is a range of hand-to-hand combat that is
addressed by necessity. Through isolation of this range of combat,
systems such as the Brazilian
method of Jiu-Jitsu and the several off-shoot systems have asserted
dominance on the ground. Much like Kali and Muay Thai, Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu and similar systems have been popular with military and law enforcement
organizations, hinging on the fact that many fights end up on the
ground. Again the triangle is a common motif in the banner of most
Grappling schools, being a symbol of the three points of
balance.
The TriCom system utilizes each of these arts to
strengthen the other. Experience that can only be gained through
military and law enforcement training and operations is used to fuse
these systems into a combative program that is inappropriate for the
sports arena and perfect for the real world.
